1879
McNeil is founded when Robert McNeil opens McNeil Pharmacy in Philadelphia, where he manufactures and sells medications to hospitals and doctors throughout the city.
1904
Robert McNeil's son, Robert Lincoln McNeil, begins his fifty-year management career at McNeil, focusing much of the company's development on the expanding pharmaceutical market.
1933
McNeil Pharmacy is incorporated as McNeil Laboratories, specializing in the direct marketing of prescription pharmaceuticals to doctors, pharmacists and hospitals.
1955
McNeil introduces TYLENOL® Elixir for children, the first aspirin-free pain reliever. TYLENOL® Elixir is available by prescription only.
1959
Johnson & Johnson acquires McNeil Laboratories, at the time net sales were $11.4 million and sales force numbered 225. The following year, TYLENOL® is approved for sale without a prescription.
1961
As the TYLENOL® line of over-the-counter (OTC) options grows (including the launch of Adult TYLENOL® Regular Strength), so does McNeil. The company moves into its Fort Washington Headquarters.
1975
The TYLENOL® line of products becomes the 5th best-selling brand of analgesic in the U.S. - Johnson & Johnson responds by creating the McNeil Consumer Products Division to manage its rapidly expanding OTC business.
1976
As McNeil launches TYLENOL® Extra Strength tablets, the TYLENOL® line of products becomes the #1 branded OTC analgesic in the U.S.
1978
McNeil Laboratories divides into two separate organizations; McNeil Pharmaceutical, a prescription only drug company, and McNeil Consumer Products Company, responsible for all OTC products marketed directly to consumers and health care professionals.
1979
TYLENOL® becomes the #1 branded product in the Health and Beauty Aid category, surpassing the 18-year leader, CREST® toothpaste.
1982
McNeil launches the first safety sealed tamper-resistant packaging in response to a criminal tampering incident with Extra Strength TYLENOL®.
1988
McNeil launches Extra Strength TYLENOL® Gelcaps, a new innovative dosing form that is easy-to-swallow.
1989-
2000
McNeil continues to expand the TYLENOL® line of products, including TYLENOL® Arthritis Pain, TYLENOL® PM and TYLENOL® cold products. During this time McNeil also acquired MOTRIN® and launched Children's MOTRIN®.
2005
McNeil launches TYLENOL® Extra Strength Rapid Release Gels, which are Gelcaps that are specially designed with holes to allow the release of powerful medicine even faster than before.
2007
Through the acquisition of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare by Johnson & Johnson McNeil acquires BENADRYL®, SUDAFED® and ZYRTEC®. The following year McNeil launches ZYRTEC® OTC, which was previously prescription only.
2008
McNeil launches TYLENOL® PM Rapid Release Gels, which relieve your pain fast so you can sleep and feel refreshed after a good night's rest.
2010
McNeil launches PRECISE™, the first ever external pain reliever from the Makers of TYLENOL®.
